Share is a UK charity that has been providing funding, professional, educational and moral support to the Romanian people for the past 20 years. It was set up by Steve and Mandy Hughes who, as a result of the opening up of Romania after the revolution in 1989 and the terrible conditions seen in the orphanages and institutions, were among the first volunteers to go to the country with humanitarian aid.
In 1994 a Romanian charity was established called ASCENSIUM and was funded by donations through SHARE. The Romanian charity was run by a small number of Romanians who were doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers and support workers. ASCENSIUM was considered to be one of the top Non-Governmental organisations in Romania.
In 2009, in light of the changes in Romania following the country's entry into the European Union, the focus for our work changed. SHARE is supporting a range of projects in the poorest areas of Romania that are making a difference to the lives of hundreds of people.
